Trade-in vs selling privately: which pays more?
Private sales usually pay more; trade-ins are faster and certain. How to decide.
A trade-in is a retailer buying your club so that they can grade it, list it, hold it and offer a return policy on it. Their offer has to leave room for all of that, which is why it sits well below what the club eventually sells for.
When a trade-in makes sense
- You are buying new equipment from the same retailer and the credit applies immediately.
- The club is older or lower value, so the difference between trade-in and private sale is small in dollars.
- You want zero hassle: no photos, no messages, no shipping, no payment risk.
- Some retailers run trade-in promotions that temporarily boost offers — worth checking before you list.
When to sell privately
- The club is a current or recent generation in a popular configuration — these sell quickly.
- It is a higher-value item, like an iron set, where the gap between trade-in and private sale is largest in dollars.
- You are happy to ship, answer questions and wait a week or two.
